Marley Floors: What Are You Dancing On?

Dancing has been one great form of entertainment and enjoyment for one and all for a long time. It is a great stress reliever as well as an excellent source of exercise. Many people enjoy dancing so much that they make a career out of it. Most of us who enjoy dancing don’t ever give a thought to where the floor came from or how it was put together. There are many different styles of dance floors that are utilized by different businesses and professions. The next time you’re out for a night on the town; ask “What are you dancing on?”

In general, dance floors are primarily manufactured from vinyl. These types of dance floors are also known as marley floors. Marley dance floors became popular in the late 1970’s by a company called Marley Floors Ltd. This company offered a kind of reversible vinyl flooring.

Marley dance floors are the most common and popular kind of floors used for dancing. If you are watching a dancing competition they are most likely using the marley flooring. Dance floors require less traction than similar flooring used in sports.

The marley dance floor should be smooth to the touch. These floors provide protection from injury in case a dancer may slip and fall. Also, if a fall occurs, there should be no burns received from the floor.

Marley dance floors are made up of multiple layers of vinyl. The first layer is very thin. It also has protection from ultra violet lighting. Many venues where marley flooring is installed use ultra violet lighting. This makes the protectant a very important attribute. The next layer of marley flooring is simply used to support the top layer. This layer also contains the main color of the marley dance floor. The middle layer of a marley dance floor is actually woven. This layer helps to prevent the floor from warping. Any deformations of the floor make it unsafe for users. The middle layer also provides elasticity to the marley floor. The soft, cushy feel of a marley dance floor is credited to the last layer. It consists of foam vinyl which absorbs the energy of a users foot motions.

There are many regulations concerning a marley dance floor. The floor should have just the right amount of give. This means when a dancer is using it, they don’t feel as if they are sinking into the floor. The same goes for the other end of the spectrum. A dancer needs a little bit of give to prevent foot or other injuries or damage.

The marley dance floor should have the proper surface texture. Being too slippery or having too much traction makes the marley dance floor dangerous and unusable for dancers.

When we are out dancing, most of us don’t realize what goes into the floor we are utilizing. We are having too much fun dancing to the beat of our favorite tunes. With a marley dance floor, you can feel confident about dancing the night away without injury.
